Before you leave home

Moving into residence can seem overwhelming. Let us provide you with a checklist of things to do before you leave that will make the process easier.

Complete the Before You Arrive Module

The Before You Arrive online module is an important part of getting ready to move into residence.

The Before you Arrive Module is available beginning in early July and you will be notified by email to your Dal email when it is ready to complete.

You'll find information about what to expect in residence, what to bring, community living,  and how to schedule a move-in appointment. Look for an email from the Dal Residence office with a link to your Before You Arrive module.

Make sure you’ve booked your move-in appointment

Move-in on the Halifax Campuses takes place on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday before Labour Day each year. You can make travel plans now, but be sure to book a specific check-in time later.

Move-in appointments are scheduled for one-hour windows over the span of the move-in days. Scheduling takes place at the end of the Before You Arrive Module – so make sure you’ve booked your arrival time!

Upload your DalCard photo

Residents will pick up their DalCard when they check in at their residence building.

All new students must upload a photo for use on their DalCard, following some photo guidelines outlined on the DalCard site. '

To ensure your DalCard is ready when you arrive, check the Important dates page to make sure you upload before the deadline.

To upload your photo, you will first need your NetID. Online photo submission for the Fall semester launches in late June. You will be notified by email once it's available.

Set your DalCard PIN

To use your DalCard for door access at residences using DalCard, you need to set a PIN number. This is easy and only takes a few minutes.

Note: you will first need your DalCard account to be active in the system and you will need your NetID to log in. We suggest waiting until the release of the Before you Arrive module in July.

Note: PIN not required for Truro residences.

1 Go to dalcard.dal.ca
2 Log in with your NetID and password
3 Go to Manage Campus ID
4 Select Change your card pin
5 Set a new 4-digit numeric PIN

Download and print your move-in instructions

Make sure to download your move-in instructions and print a copy to bring with you! The PDF includes a map pin to load into your GPS.

Order your textbooks and dorm goods

The Dal Bookstore’s Dal Ready program is the easiest way to have all your dorm essentials waiting for you when you arrive. When you order before the deadline, they will be in your room waiting for you when you arrive – including mini fridges and microwaves.

Program opens early Summer.
