Degree Options

Major or Honours students may, with the approval of the Department of German, take up to one year (30 credit hours) at a university in a German-speaking country and receive credit at 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂ. The department has exchange arrangements with universities in Munich and Kiel. In addition, there is a visiting scholars program which brings distinguished scholars from Germany to 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏÂ.

BA (90 credit hour) Minor in German

Requirements:

This minor is available to students registered in a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program.

A BA (90 credit hours) degree program with a minor in German is also available.

Students must complete between 18 and 27 credit hours selected from courses taught in German beyond the 1000 level, at least 6 credit hours of which must be above the 2000 level.

BA (120 credit hour) Major in German

Requirements:

For a BA with a Major in German, at least 36 (and up to 54) credit hours beyond the 1000 level must be completed; at least 18 of these credit hours must be above the 2000 level. 12 credit hours must be in courses dealing with Literature, Thought and/or Culture.

BA (120 credit hour) Double Major in German

Requirements:

A BA with a Double Major in German and another subject requires a combination of 60 to 84 intermediate and advanced credit hours in the two subjects. Of these 30 to 54 credit hours can be in German, and at least 18 must be above the 2000 level. 12 credit hours must be in courses dealing with Literature, Thought and/or Culture.

BA (120 credit hour) Honours in German

Requirements:

Beyond Beginner-level German, the Honours program requires 54 additional credit hours in German Language, Literature, Thought, and/or Culture at the 1000 level or higher, including at least 12 credit hours at the 3000 level or higher. It is recommended that at least 24 credit hours be completed in the last two years of the program. At the end of the program, students take an oral Honours Exam

Honours students are strongly advised to complete some classwork in Germany, e.g. through the Canadian Year in Freiburg Program. Consult with the undergraduate advisor.

BA (120 credit hour) Combined Honours in German

Requirements:

To take an Honours degree combining German with another subject, a student must consult with the academic program advisers of both departments to arrange the specifics of the program. In general, a combination of 66-84 intermediate- and advanced-level credit hours in the two subjects is required. Of these 30 to 48 credit hours can be in German, and at least 18 must be above the 2000 level. If students intend to take the German Honours exam, they need a minimum of 36 credit hours in German, including courses in Literature, Thought and/or Culture; if the Honours thesis or exam is completed in the other department, a minimum of 30 intermediate and advanced credit hours in German is required.

There are a variety of ways to combine a major in German with many other academic programs.

Combinations to consider:


Bachelor of Arts

Double Major or Combined Honours: As part of a Double Major or Combined Honours program, German can be combined with most other Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Science subjects. 

Bachelor of Engineering

Bachelor of Arts students can complete a Bachelor of Engineering degree concurrently with their Arts program. Students in this program complete the equivalent of a three-year Bachelor of Arts degree in German and a Bachelor of Engineering in a period of five to six calendar years, depending on whether or not a co-op program is selected for Engineering.

Bachelor of Science

In the Bachelor of Science program, German can be combined with most of the Science Major or Honours subjects, provided a larger number of credits is taken in the Science subject.

Minor options

Minor in German

This minor is available to students registered in a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program.
