Katie Mahoney (BSc’16) was just finishing up a degree in marine biology when a Facebook challenge sent her career in a completely new direction.

Universities across the province joined 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏ in raising funds to improve food security for their students, inspired by the J & W Murphy Foundation's generosity as a partner in the project.

It’s estimated at least one in three post-secondary students in Canada experiences food insecurity, a problem exacerbated by this year's pandemic. The Food Security Project was launched by Dal this year to help raise funds to support student-led food programs.

After successfully defending her Interdisciplinary PhD thesis at Dal this spring, Lindsay Wallace began a fellowship at the University of Cambridge — strengthened by skills she developed through some of the many professional development programs available to graduate students at Dal.

Inaugural Margaret R. Crickard Scholarship recipients Samantha Howard and Selam Abdella, both International Development Studies students, have worked hard to get to the fourth year of their degrees, exemplifying the values of academic achievement and community involvement.
