Supporting the Success of Farm Succession

The job of transitioning a family business is a difficult one that can seem overwhelming to many families. However, the successful transition of these businesses is crucial to the economies of Atlantic Canada- especially those in rural areas.

In 2011, according to Statistics Canada, 60% of farms in the Atlantic region were run by someone over the age of 55. This will equate to the need for businesses to change ownership in the near future. Extended Learning and the 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏ Agricultural Students Association, of the 9 1Ãâ·Ñ°æÏ Agricultural campus, are teaming up to provide learning opportunities to support family members, of all ages and stages, to face this task.

, a nationally acclaimed expert on Farm Succession, will visit campus November 5th and 6th, to share some wisdom with our students, the agricultural community, and anyone interested in how the issue of business succession can affect the region’s prosperity.
